TECHNO SOUL MUSIC

November 27, 2010

Like I said before, long time ago, techno music had SOUL.  “Techno” was really a blanket term that made more sense back then.

Yeah, some of it was really close to what you would consider house music. I guess in UK back then people would have just said what I listened to was house music, or ACID HOUSE. around the time ACID HOUSE started blurring w/ techno and house.   But I argue techno from the godfathers sounded like house music, maybe more cold and stark.  I don’t really care about being so specific about genres, especially about vintage club music. All that matters it had soul. it moved you… beats and bass.

That’s what I’m gonna try to be doing with my new techno project. serious Bass… serious Soul. Like.. looping clips of bassy soul rump shaking shit.

blossom hats give me nrg

November 25, 2010

aren’t they cute? I was finishing my last bass line today, getting kinda sleepy, and I thought the power of turning my hat backwards would maybe grant me HI – NRG 90z techno powers.  I think it did.  and then I thought of these guys and I could have hung out with them today.

I love you

sometimes when it’s almost 1am and I just produced a bunch of songs for live shows (boring…and this after purging a virus from my computer… level 10 virus! what’s that?!)

I think to myself ……
it’s time for bed.

then I look at that Prophet 08, get all horned up, and say Fuck iT! time to make some music.

Crapnose

November 22, 2010

I was reading a blog entry from mpls dude sovietpanda about CFCF, and it’s so odd because I have known Mike for years. We have not talked much over the years, but I met him on Astralwerks message board. He was like 13 years old, and acted like it. I remember he pissed a lot of people off. Some music message board type of shit – pretty standard…I can’t remember specifics. He went by “Crapnose” back then. I think I remember his music as.. I guess.. I would have considered it more so zany beats without so much a specific sound. More so experimenting in making music than anything. I may even have a “MUMRA” (my old music project) remix of “Crapnose” laying around somewhere.

Anyway, I think I had last heard from him in 2001 or so – or whenever that Astralwerks message board shut down.

Then years later in 2007, I ran across him again. I didn’t realize it at the time, but we both had entered a remix for Crystal Castles “Air War” . He was no longer going by “Crapnose”, he was now CFCF. Even more, both our remixes were selected by Crystal Castles, along with Lazaro Casanova as “winning entries”. They were supposed to be released as 12″ by SLU Records? Anyway, that never happened.

Since that time, CFCF has done scores of remixes on fantastic labels – and released a great FL album. I def. admire his sound and ability to break into music biz so well, doing what he wants to do.  small world!

Now that im making techno again (for 2 days), I started listening to some on Soundcloud (very limited point of reference, yes) and the beats are “ok” but they lack character. Like people just programmed reason? did everything in the box? people need to add something to them. soul. love? not sure. but techno used to have that you know.

Anyway, I think it’s like anything. Personal preference really. I don’t like things (except myself) clean. And these techno beats I’m hearing are fucking clean. Way too clean. I love some of the synth work – I heard this local artist (Minneapolis) Rachel Palmer that actually had some nice sounding synth work. And just a great overall chill vibe. It’s more in the vein of “ambient techno” or I guess minimal? (but not boring like “minimal”).

My point I guess is I like a little GRITTT, even if the techno is chill out techno. Just put a little dirt in there.. 2 be sure, it’s techno right?

in about 2 weeks you’re gonna see how techno influenced my life. And in a way, my big bro. Thanks bro for bringing me to SNDP all ages at First Ave. when I was like 13???? WHAT?? serious? awesome. and for getting your dirty paws on cool traxx like derrick May …and making Radio Depth Probe mix tapes. AND HAVING A KILLER SOUND SYSTEM in your car that just banged huge techno tunes out of it. Subwooofin it. those are some good memories, better than the times you beat me up.

I’m just happy to be able to work on music that I want, when I want, and how I want.  I would say I really only do music semi-pro because I don’t make enough money.  But I have to say once again, to be able to do music is a privilege and when I finish new music and things come together, it’s worth everything in the world to me.
